DIALOG
Disciple 2: Teacher! Tell us a Bible story! One with adventure!
Disciple 1: Yes, but maybe not too frightening.
Teacher: I know just the story. The story of David and Goliath.
Disciple 2: Oh! The giant story! He was really huge, right?
Teacher: Very huge. Goliath was the strongest warrior in the Philistine army. He was over nine feet tall and wore heavy bronze armor that shined in the sun.
Disciple 1: Nine feet? That's taller than a doorway!
Teacher: Much taller. Every day Goliath would march out and shout to the Israelite army.
(Goliath puppet pops up proudly.)
Goliath: Ha! Israelites! Send me your best warrior! If he defeats me, we will serve you! But if I defeat him, you will serve us!
Disciple 2: Wow… that giant sounds very confident.
Teacher: Confident—and very proud. For forty days he shouted this challenge.
Disciple 1: Forty days? Didn't anyone fight him?
Teacher: No one. The soldiers were all too afraid.
Disciple 2: Not even the strongest soldier?
Teacher: Not even the strongest. But one day, a young shepherd boy arrived at the camp.
(David puppet pops up.)
David: Hello, brothers! Father sent food for you.
Disciple 1: Wait… a shepherd? Like someone who takes care of sheep?
Teacher: Exactly. His name was David. While he was there, he heard Goliath shouting.
Goliath: (booming voice) Is there no one brave in Israel? Send someone to fight me!
David: Who is this giant who dares to challenge the army of the living God?
Disciple 2: Whoa! David isn't scared at all!
Teacher: No, he wasn't. David trusted God.
Disciple 1: But Goliath had armor, a sword, and a spear!
Teacher: The king tried to give David heavy armor.
David: I cannot fight in this armor. I have not trained with it.
Teacher: So David took it off. Instead, he took his shepherd’s staff, his sling, and five smooth stones from a nearby stream.
Disciple 2: Five stones? Against a giant?
(Goliath steps forward again.)
Goliath: (laughing loudly) Am I a dog, that you come at me with sticks? Come here, boy! I will defeat you easily!
David: You come to me with a sword and a spear. But I come to you in the name of the Lord! Today the Lord will give me victory!
Disciple 1: That’s brave!
Teacher: Then David ran toward the giant.
Disciple 2: He ran toward him?!
Teacher: Yes! David put a stone into his sling, spun it around…
(Teacher makes spinning sound.)
Teacher: …and released it!
Disciple 1 and Disciple 2: Wow!!
Teacher: It hit Goliath right in the forehead.
(Goliath wobbles.)
Goliath: Oh no, I don't feel good…!
(Goliath falls down.)
Teacher: The giant crashed to the ground. David had defeated him!
Disciple 2: Yes! The shepherd beat the giant!
Disciple 1: So the lesson is that you don’t have to be big to do great things?
Teacher: Exactly. David’s strength wasn’t in his muscles. His strength was in his faith in God.
David: The Lord is stronger than any giant.
Disciple 2: So when we face big problems…
Disciple 1: …we should trust God too?
Teacher: That’s right. No giant is too big for God.
Disciple 2: Stone power!
Teacher: (laughing gently) Faith power.
David: Trust God!
(All puppets exit.)
