The Sabbath Chase

4 Puppets:

  • Mike: Driver of the second car. Friendly, wants to greet his friends. (Suggest: A warm puppet, holding a tiny steering wheel.)

  • Lisa: Passenger in Mike's car. Cheerful and encouraging. (Suggest: A bright puppet, looking out the "window.")

  • Sarah: Driver of the first car. Defensive, doesn't recognize the car behind her. (Suggest: A focused puppet, gripping her steering wheel, looking annoyed.)

  • Dave: Passenger in Sarah's car. Also defensive, feeds into the frustration. (Suggest: An energetic puppet, turning around to look, getting worked up.)

The scene: Two cars are on the road heading to church. Sarah is driving, Dave is beside her. Behind them is Mike's car with Lisa.

Dialog

Mike: (driving, squinting ahead) Lisa, look at that blue car up ahead. I think that's Sarah and Dave from church!

Lisa: Oh, you're right! It's so good to see them! We should catch up and say happy Sabbath!

Mike: Great idea. Let's just speed up a little and pass them so we can wave.
(Mike accelerates. Sarah glances in her rearview mirror.)

Sarah: Ugh. Dave, look at this guy behind us. Riding our bumper now.

Dave: (turning around) Yeah, I see him. Probably late for something. Not our problem.

Sarah: Exactly. I'm driving the speed limit. He can wait.

(Mike tries to move into the passing lane. Sarah moves slightly to block him.)
Mike: (confused) Huh. They're blocking me. Maybe they don't see me.

Lisa: Try tapping your horn. Just a friendly little beep to get their attention.
(Mike gives a quick, polite honk.)

Dave: (in Sarah's car, getting annoyed) Oh, now he's honking? Who does this guy think he is?

Sarah: I know, right? Road rage much? Well, he's not passing. Not on my watch.

Dave: Yeah! Show him!
(Mike tries again to pass. Sarah speeds up just enough to stay ahead.)

Lisa: Mike, they're still blocking us. And we're getting close to the church exit.

Mike: This is so strange. I just want to wish them happy Sabbath! Why won't they let us pass?

(They continue this frustrating dance for another minute. The church parking lot entrance comes into view.)
Sarah: (taking a breath) Dave... hang on. Let's think for a second.

Dave: What do you mean? We're winning!

Sarah: Winning what? What are we actually doing here?

Dave: (pausing) ...I don't know. Being right?

Sarah: But right about what? We don't even know who this person is. They could be trying to tell us something important. Or maybe they're just having an emergency.

Dave: (softer now) Yeah... we don't know their story.

Sarah: Exactly. The Bible says to be patient and kind. I don't think blocking someone from passing counts as either.

Dave: You're right. Let them pass.
(Sarah slows down and waves Mike forward.)

Sarah: (motioning) Go ahead. Pass us.

(Mike's car pulls alongside Sarah's car just before the parking lot entrance. Mike rolls down his window. Lisa waves happily.)

Mike: (calling out, beaming) Happy Sabbath, you two!

Lisa: Happy Sabbath! So good to see you!

Sarah: (shocked, mouth open) Wait... Mike? Lisa?

Dave: (slapping his forehead) Oh no. It's them! From the potluck!

Sarah: (calling back, embarrassed) Happy Sabbath! We're so sorry! We didn't recognize your car!

Mike: No problem at all! New car! See you inside!

(Both cars pull into the parking lot. All four puppets take a moment.)
Sarah: Well, I feel terrible. We blocked our own friends for ten minutes.

Dave: Because they bought a new car. We need to apologize.

Sarah: Definitely. And remember this next time someone wants to pass.

Dave: Yeah. Patience isn't just waiting. It's not assuming the worst about people.

Sarah: Exactly. Come on, let's go find them.

(All four puppets nod, take a deep breath, and exit together.)
